A company name is for an incorporated company (a Pty Ltd) and comes with an ACN. A trademark, registered with IP Australia, is the only one that gives you exclusive legal rights to use a name or logo for your goods or services. Many businesses register a business name and, if the brand is important, also apply for a trademark.

You should also do a trademark search on IP Australia and check that the .com.au domain and key social handles are free. To register a .com.au domain you need a valid, active ABN or ACN, and from 2021 the domain must match or relate to your registered business/company name or trademark. So it's worth picking a name where the .com.au is free before you register, and registering the business name and ABN first so you're eligible for the matching domain.
