QLD figures read on Source: Queensland Government (Department of Transport and Main Roads). Read from the Queensland Government registration costs page on 31 August 2026, effective 1 July 2026. Queensland prices registration by cylinder count, not by body type: the passenger figure is the 4 cylinder rate and the SUV and ute figures are the 5 or 6 cylinder rate, so a 4 cylinder turbo-diesel ute should use the passenger figure. CTP is shown at the midpoint of the published $411.80 to $424.80 insurer range.
State note (QLD): Queensland prices registration by cylinder count: $385.45 for 4 cylinders, $610.30 for 5 or 6. CTP varies by insurer (Suncorp, RACQ, Allianz, QBE) across a published $411.80 to $424.80 range. The Traffic Improvement Fee is $67.25 and shown separately.
Figures are estimates for privately-owned light vehicles. Real renewal cost depends on tare weight, garaged postcode, driver record, insurer (where applicable), and any concessions. Registration components change on 1 July with each state budget. Always confirm with your state registry before paying. Not financial advice.

What rego costs in Queensland

Queensland is the one state that prices registration on how many cylinders the engine has, not on what the vehicle weighs or what shape it is. That single rule catches people out more than any other rego quirk in the country: a four-cylinder turbo-diesel ute is charged at the four-cylinder rate, the same as a small hatchback, while a six-cylinder sedan pays almost $225 more.

A year's registration, by vehicle class

VehicleRegistrationCTP insuranceOther leviesTotal a year
Passenger car$385$418$67$871
SUV$610$418$67$1,096
Ute or light commercial$610$418$67$1,096

That works out at about $73 a month for a passenger car and $91 a month for a ute.

Cylinders, not body type or weight

The Department of Transport and Main Roads charges $385.45 a year for a four-cylinder vehicle and $610.30 for a five or six-cylinder one. On top of that sits a traffic improvement fee of $67.25 and the CTP premium, shown here at the midpoint of the published insurer range. Because the fee follows the engine, the usual passenger, SUV and ute categories are a poor guide in Queensland: pick the figure by counting cylinders. A four-cylinder ute should use the passenger figure on this page, not the ute one.

Where these figures come from

Read from the Queensland Government registration costs page on 31 August 2026, effective 1 July 2026. Queensland prices registration by cylinder count, not by body type: the passenger figure is the 4 cylinder rate and the SUV and ute figures are the 5 or 6 cylinder rate, so a 4 cylinder turbo-diesel ute should use the passenger figure. CTP is shown at the midpoint of the published $411.80 to $424.80 insurer range.

Registration components change on 1 July with each state budget, so check the total against your renewal notice before you pay. The national rego cost calculator covers all eight states and territories and says, for each one, when its figures were last read.

Running a vehicle for work

If the vehicle earns its keep, registration is one line in a bigger number. The cents per kilometre calculator works out what the ATO lets you claim per work kilometre, and the depreciation calculator handles the vehicle itself.

Frequently asked questions

How does counting cylinders change what I pay in Queensland?

Registration is $385.45 a year for four cylinders and $610.30 for five or six, a difference of $224.85. Body type and tare weight do not enter into it, which is unique among the states. A four-cylinder turbo-diesel ute pays the same registration as a four-cylinder hatchback, so on this page it should use the passenger figure rather than the ute one.

What is the traffic improvement fee on a Queensland renewal?

A separate $67.25 charged on each annual renewal alongside the registration fee and CTP. It is not part of the registration fee itself, which is why a quote that only mentions registration understates a Queensland renewal. The calculator above includes it in the total.

Is Queensland CTP a fixed amount or does it vary by insurer?

It varies, but inside a narrow band that the government publishes, unlike the open-market premiums in New South Wales and the ACT. The published range at the time these figures were read was $411.80 to $424.80 for a class 1 vehicle, and the figure used above is the midpoint of that range. You choose the insurer, and the price difference between them is a few dollars.

How we calculate this

This page adds the base registration fee, any separate vehicle tax, compulsory third-party insurance and any state levies for a privately-owned light vehicle in Queensland, on the Queensland Government (Department of Transport and Main Roads) schedule. Those figures were read from that authority's own fee pages on 31 August 2026 and are current from 1 July 2026. Registration components change on 1 July with each state budget. CTP is shown at the midpoint of the published insurer range, which the Queensland government sets, so insurers differ by only a few dollars. Confirm the exact amount on your renewal notice before paying.
