Every road-legal vehicle supplied to the Australian market since 1 January 1989 carries a unique 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN), as required by Australian Design Rule (ADR) 61. The VIN is stamped on the driver-side windscreen corner, on a sticker inside the driver-door jamb, on the engine bay firewall, and printed on the vehicle's registration documents. It encodes the manufacturer, plant country, model year, and a stack of build characteristics.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), they identify the manufacturer and country of build. Characters 4-8 are the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)covering body type, engine, restraint systems, and trim. Character 9 is the check digit, a calculated value that lets you detect a single-character typo. Character 10 is the model year(using a defined letter/digit code). Character 11 is the assembly plant. Characters 12-17 are the vehicle serial number assigned sequentially.
A full profile in five sections: VIN validation (an ISO 3779 check-digit test computed in your browser, model year and vehicle age); identification (make, model, series, trim, body and cab type, vehicle type, doors); engine & drivetrain (fuel, displacement, cylinders, configuration, power in hp/kW, transmission, gears, drive type); dimensions & weight (GVWR, curb weight, wheelbase, wheels, bed); and safety & driver assistance (ABS, stability and traction control, TPMS, airbag locations, backup camera, blind-spot, forward-collision and lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise). Empty fields are hidden, you only see what the manufacturer actually submitted to the database.
One caveat that matters more here than anywhere else: vPIC is a United States registry, and manufacturers lodge the vehicles they sell into the United States. A large slice of the Australian fleet is not in it, including the Thai-built utes and SUVs that dominate our roads and anything built in Australia for the local market. When vPIC has no record, this page tells you so and falls back to what the VIN itself carries: the country of build, the manufacturer behind the World Manufacturer Identifier, and the model year. It will not invent a make or a model it cannot establish.
There is one more source worth knowing about, because it is the reason this page can name a model on cars a US decoder cannot. The NZ Transport Agency publishes the New Zealand Motor Vehicle Register as open data, covering close to six million vehicle records. Australia and New Zealand are both right-hand-drive markets supplied largely from the same Thai and Japanese plants, so a VIN prefix that draws a blank from NHTSA very often appears on the New Zealand register with a make, model, variant, body type, fuel and transmission attached. We match the first 11 characters of your VIN against our copy of that register, and widen to the first 8 only when the longer prefix has no match.
Two limits, stated plainly. It is a New Zealand register, not an Australian one: a variant sold only here will not be in it, and a match describes the New Zealand vehicles built on that prefix rather than your specific car. And a VIN prefix usually spans several model years, so where the register gives a range we show the range and tell you to read the year off the build plate. We would rather show you a range than guess a year.

Everything on this page is free because it is computed from the VIN itself plus a public build database: whether the VIN is genuine and well-formed, where and when the vehicle was built, and exactly what it is (make, model, engine, body, safety equipment). For a private buyer, that answers the "is this ad describing the real car?" question. If the seller's "2018 turbo diesel" decodes as a 2015 petrol, walk away.
What no free check can answer is the car's legal and financial history in Australia. Three things can survive a private sale and become your problem: money owing on the car (a registered security interest lets the financier repossess it even after you have paid the seller), a listing on the written-off vehicle register, and a stolen-vehicle report. All three live on the Australian Government's Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR), and the official PPSR vehicle search costs about $2. Third-party "car history" sites typically resell the same PPSR data for $20 to $40 with a valuation bolted on. A VIN check tells you about the vehicle; a rego check tells you about its registration. Every Australian state and territory offers a free online rego check, usually searched by number plate, that confirms whether the vehicle is currently registered and when the registration expires. Sellers sometimes let rego lapse, and an unregistered car can't legally be driven home.

Two caveats. First, state checks only see their own registers: a car written off in Queensland and re-registered in NSW can look clean on a NSW-only check, which is why the PPSR (a national register) is the final word on write-offs and stolen listings. Second, no state rego check shows finance owing. Use the rego check to confirm registration, this page to verify the vehicle, and a PPSR report for history. The 17-character VIN only became mandatory for vehicles supplied to the Australian market on 1 January 1989 (ADR 61). Anything older typically carries a shorter chassis number stamped on the firewall or a chassis rail and shown on an identification plate, with no check digit and no encoded year or origin. Japanese-domestic grey imports are the other big group: Japan doesn't use ISO 3779 VINs domestically, so imports carry a frame number such as JZX100-0012345 (model code plus serial). Neither format will decode in a 17-character tool, and the NHTSA database won't recognise them either. You can still search the PPSR by chassis number for these vehicles, and the compliance plate fitted at import time usually records the identifier used for Australian registration.
Alongside the VIN, every vehicle has an engine number stamped directly on the engine block and recorded against the registration. It isn't part of the VIN: a decode returns the engine's specification (fuel, displacement, cylinders, power) rather than that serial number. It matters when buying. If the number stamped on the block doesn't match the registration papers, the engine has been replaced at some point, and if the change was never recorded with the state registry it can hold up a transfer or roadworthy inspection. The stamping location varies by engine, but it's commonly on a machined pad near the exhaust manifold, on the block face near the transmission housing, or under the intake. Check it with a torch during any pre-purchase inspection, at the same time you compare the VIN on the windscreen, the door-jamb plate and the papers.

It cannot tell you about money owing (security interests), write-off or repairable-write-off status, or whether the vehicle is reported stolen. That information lives on the Australian Government's Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR). Before buying any used car in Australia, buy an official PPSR vehicle report (about $2 from ppsr.gov.au) to check finance, write-off and stolen status.
The 9th character of a VIN is a 'check digit': a value mathematically derived from the other 16 characters under ISO 3779. Recomputing it lets you catch a single mistyped character. Importantly, the check digit is mandatory only for North American (US and Canadian) vehicles; it's optional elsewhere. Many Australian-, Japanese- and European-delivered cars legitimately fail the check-digit test even though the VIN is genuine, so we flag a mismatch as a warning, not a hard error.

First, we fall back to the VIN itself, showing the country of build, the manufacturer from the World Manufacturer Identifier, and the model year from character 10, all computed in your browser under ISO 3779 and ISO 3780. Second, we match the VIN prefix against the New Zealand Motor Vehicle Register, which the NZ Transport Agency publishes as open data. VINs use the letters A-Z and digits 0-9 with three exceptions: the letters I, O and Q are never used because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0. If your VIN appears to contain one of those letters, double-check the document, it's almost certainly a misread digit.

Every Australian state and territory runs a free rego check that takes a number plate (and in some states a VIN) and returns the registration status and expiry: Service NSW, VicRoads, Queensland's TMR, WA's Department of Transport, SA's EzyReg, and equivalents in Tasmania, the ACT and the NT. A rego check confirms the car is currently registered, but like a free VIN check it doesn't show finance owing, interstate write-offs or stolen status; only a $2 PPSR report covers those nationally.
A chassis number is the older, shorter identifier manufacturers stamped on the vehicle's frame before the 17-character VIN became mandatory for vehicles supplied to Australia (1 January 1989 under ADR 61). Japanese-market grey imports also carry a frame number (for example JZX100-0012345) rather than a full 17-character VIN. A chassis or frame number won't decode in a 17-character tool like this one, but the PPSR accepts chassis numbers when searching older vehicles.

Where vPIC holds the vehicle, the year, make, model and base engine spec are reliable; trim and option-pack details depend on what each manufacturer submitted. vPIC is not a global registry, though, so it holds nothing at all for a good share of Australian-delivered stock. Where that happens we tell you, show what the VIN itself encodes, and add a match from the New Zealand Motor Vehicle Register where one exists. Treat the New Zealand match as strong evidence rather than proof: it is a record of the New Zealand vehicles built on the same VIN prefix, so where it spans several build years we show the range instead of picking one, and where the prefix covers more than one make we show nothing.
The validity check runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. The full decode sends the VIN to the NHTSA vPIC API (that's how decoding works) and sends the VIN to our own server so we can match its prefix against our copy of the New Zealand Motor Vehicle Register. This VIN check and decoder works in three stages. The validity check runs 100% in your browser with no API call: it validates the VIN is exactly 17 characters using only valid VIN characters (rejecting I, O and Q), recomputes the ISO 3779 check digit (transliteration table × positional weights, mod 11) and compares it to the 9th character, then reads the country/region of build from the first character, the manufacturer from the World Manufacturer Identifier in characters 1 to 3, and the model year from the 10th. The full decode then sends the cleaned VIN to the free public NHTSA vPIC DecodeVinValues API and renders the returned identification, engine, dimension and safety fields grouped by section, with empty fields hidden and a low-confidence warning where NHTSA flags the record. vPIC is a United States registry, so it holds no record at all for many Australian-delivered vehicles.
