Do bricklayers need a licence in Australia?
Generally there is no standalone licence just to lay bricks. However, structural work, and building work above a value threshold, must be done by or under a licensed builder, and some states, including Queensland through QBCC and New South Wales, license bricklaying and blocklaying contractors directly. Rules differ by state and job value, so check your local building regulator before you book.
Can a bricklayer build my retaining wall?
Yes for many garden-scale walls, but retaining walls above a trigger height, often between half a metre and one metre depending on your state and council, commonly need engineering design and approval. Walls that support driveways, structures or a neighbour's land are higher risk again. Ask who provides the engineering, and confirm drainage behind the wall is included in the quote.
How long does new brickwork take to cure?
Mortar takes initial set within a day or two, but full strength develops over several weeks. Most bricklayers ask you to keep loads, gates and fixtures off new work for at least a week, longer in cold or wet weather. Efflorescence, the white salt bloom on new brickwork, is common and usually washes off over time.
