Compare local lawyers and book online in seconds.
Every practising lawyer in Australia must be admitted to the profession and hold a current practising certificate issued through their state or territory's regulatory body, and most concentrate on a few areas such as family, property, wills, commercial or criminal law. Choosing someone who regularly runs matters like yours matters far more than the size of the firm or its offices.
OneBookPlus lets you book an initial consultation directly from a firm's profile, with the appointment confirmed instantly and reminders sent before you attend. You can compare practice areas, locations and client reviews side by side, and keep a record of every appointment if you need to refer back to dates later.

List your business, freeHow to choose a good Lawyer
- Check the lawyer holds a current practising certificate; your state law society or regulator keeps a public register.
- Choose someone who handles your type of matter every week, not occasionally between other work.
- Ask for written costs disclosure upfront; firms are required to provide it for most matters.
- Fixed fees suit conveyancing and simple wills; complex litigation rarely fits a fixed price honestly.
- Confirm who will actually run your file day to day, the partner you met or a junior.
- Read reviews for communication and responsiveness, consistently the most common complaint about law firms.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check a lawyer is entitled to practise?
Lawyers must be admitted and hold a current practising certificate issued through their state or territory body, such as the Law Society of New South Wales or the Victorian Legal Services Board. Most jurisdictions have public registers you can search online. Providing legal services without a practising certificate is unlawful.
What is a costs agreement and costs disclosure?
For most matters, firms must give you written disclosure setting out how fees are calculated, an estimate of total costs, and your rights to query a bill. Under the Uniform Law applying in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, disclosure obligations kick in once costs exceed $750. Ask for updated estimates as the matter progresses.
Do I need a lawyer or a conveyancer to buy property?
Licensed conveyancers handle standard residential transfers in most states and often charge less than law firms. A solicitor makes sense where there are complications such as deceased estates, disputes or unusual contract conditions. In Queensland, conveyancing is carried out by solicitors, and contract terms there are commonly negotiated before signing.
