Accountants
Compare local accountants and book online in seconds.
A good accountant pays for themselves in tax saved, penalties avoided and hours you get back. In Australia, anyone charging a fee to prepare or lodge tax returns must be a registered tax agent with the Tax Practitioners Board, and many accountants also hold CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ or IPA membership, which adds professional standards and ongoing education requirements.
OneBookPlus lets you book an initial consultation with local accountants at a time that suits, including after-hours slots during tax season. Recurring appointments for BAS and planning reviews can be set once and forgotten, and reminders mean deadlines like quarterly BAS never sneak up on you again.

List your business, freeHow to choose a good Accountant
- Verify tax agent registration on the TPB public register; it is required by law for paid tax work.
- Choose experience that matches your situation, whether sole trader, company, trust, SMSF or rental property portfolios.
- Ask about fees upfront: fixed-fee packages are increasingly common and easier to budget than open-ended hourly billing.
- Check they work with your software, such as Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks, so handover is painless.
- Look for proactive advice through the year, not just a form-filling exercise every July.
- Confirm who actually does your work, whether a partner, an employee or an offshore team.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an accountant and a registered tax agent?
Anyone can call themselves an accountant, but only a registered tax agent can legally charge fees to prepare and lodge tax returns in Australia. Registration with the Tax Practitioners Board requires qualifications, experience and professional indemnity insurance. Check the TPB register before paying anyone for tax work.
Do I get more time to lodge if I use a tax agent?
Usually yes. Self-lodgers must generally lodge by 31 October, but clients on a registered tax agent's lodgment program can have until as late as May the following year, depending on their history. You need to be on the agent's books before the October deadline to access the extension.
Are accountant fees tax deductible?
Fees for managing your tax affairs, including tax return preparation, tax advice and travel to see your agent, are generally deductible in the year you pay them. Your accountant will include this year's fee as a deduction in next year's return. Fees for private matters unrelated to tax are not deductible.
