Who owns the copyright to my photos?
For photos commissioned for private or domestic purposes, such as weddings and family portraits, copyright generally belongs to you as the client unless the contract says otherwise. For commercial work, the photographer usually owns it and licenses use to you. Most photographers use contracts that spell this out, so read yours before signing.
How far ahead should I book a wedding photographer?
Twelve to eighteen months for popular photographers on peak Saturday dates in spring and autumn, especially around Sydney, Melbourne and destination regions like Byron Bay and the Yarra Valley. Off-peak winter and weekday dates can often be booked a few months out and sometimes attract discounts of 10 to 20 per cent.
How many photos should I expect, and when?
A rough industry norm is 40 to 80 edited images per hour of event coverage, so a full wedding day yields several hundred. Portrait sessions usually deliver 20 to 60 finals. Turnaround runs from days for headshots to four to ten weeks for weddings; get the timeframe in writing.
