How this was worked out
Enter your state, years of continuous service, and pay to estimate your long service leave entitlement.
Set by legislation: Long service leave is governed by each state and territory's LSL Act and changes only when that Act is amended, figures here are the current standard statutory rates. SA and the NT accrue 13 weeks at 10 years (about 50% more than the 8.6667 weeks elsewhere); VIC and the ACT let you take leave from 7 years. Awards and industry portable-leave schemes (construction, cleaning, security) can differ. Always check the Act for your state.

Long service leave in New South Wales
New South Wales runs long service leave under the Long Service Leave Act 1955, the oldest of the eight statutes still in force. It gives two months of paid leave, 8.6667 weeks, after ten years of continuous service with the one employer, and it is one of only two jurisdictions where a pro rata entitlement can arise as early as five years.

|---|---|
| Accrual per year of continuous service | 0.86667 weeks |
| Leave can be taken from | 10 years (8.6667 weeks accrued) |
| Pro rata payout possible from | 5 years, on a qualifying termination only |

The extra month every further five years
Most of the comparison tables you will find stop at ten years, which is where New South Wales starts to differ. After the first ten years, the 1955 Act adds one further month, about 4.3333 weeks, for every additional five years of continuous service. Fifteen years is therefore closer to thirteen weeks than to the 8.6667 a flat ten-year figure implies, and the calculator above keeps accruing at the same yearly rate rather than stopping at the decade.
How the figure is worked out
- Accrued weeks: years of continuous service × 0.86667
- Accrued hours: accrued weeks × your ordinary weekly hours
- Estimated pay: accrued weeks × your ordinary weekly pay
Worked example. An employee with 10 years of continuous service in New South Wales on $1,500 a week, a 38-hour week at about $39.47 an hour, accrues 10 × 0.86667 = 8.6667 weeks of long service leave, worth about $13,000.
How New South Wales compares
Against Victoria, the state most often compared with it, New South Wales accrues at the same yearly rate but makes an employee wait ten years to take the leave instead of seven. Against South Australia it accrues roughly a third less: the same ten years of service is 8.6667 weeks here and 13 weeks there.
On the accrual rate, New South Wales matches VIC, QLD, WA, TAS, ACT. The full comparison across all eight jurisdictions, and a calculator that lets you switch between them, is on the national long service leave calculator.
Before you rely on this figure
This is an estimate built on the standard statutory accrual rate in the Long Service Leave Act 1955 (NSW), which changes only when that Act is amended rather than on a financial-year cycle. Three things can move the answer: an award or enterprise agreement with better terms than the Act, a break in service that does not count as continuous employment, and portable long service leave schemes, which run in industries such as building and construction and carry service between employers under their own rules. Where any of those apply, check the position with NSW Government, Long service leave before acting on a number.

Frequently asked questions
How much more accrues after fifteen years of unbroken employment in New South Wales?
The Long Service Leave Act 1955 adds one further month, about 4.3333 weeks, for every additional five years of continuous service beyond the first ten. Ten years is 8.6667 weeks, and fifteen years comes to about 13 weeks. The calculator above applies the same yearly accrual rate past the ten-year mark rather than capping it.
Which kinds of resignation attract a pro rata payout at the five-year mark?
A pro rata entitlement at five years is conditional on the reason the employment ended, not simply on reaching five years. It applies where the employee resigns because of illness, incapacity or domestic necessity, reaches retirement age, dies, or where the employer ends the employment for a reason other than serious misconduct. A plain voluntary resignation at five years usually attracts nothing.
Does the 1955 Act cover an employee who works in New South Wales for an interstate business?
Long service leave follows the state where the work is performed rather than where the employer is registered, so an employee whose ordinary place of work is in New South Wales is generally covered by the 1955 Act. Where service spans more than one state, or where an industry portable long service leave scheme applies, the position is more involved and worth checking with the NSW authority directly.

How we calculate this
This calculator applies the Long Service Leave Act 1955 (NSW) accrual rate of 0.86667 weeks for each year of continuous service, reaching 8.6667 weeks at 10 years, which is when leave can be taken in New South Wales. Accrued weeks are multiplied by your ordinary weekly pay for the estimated dollar value. A pro rata entitlement can arise from 5 years, but only on a qualifying termination. Long service leave is set by statute rather than a financial-year table, and an award, an enterprise agreement or an industry portable-leave scheme can give better terms than the Act.
