Start an app trial without a card

Most paid apps start with 14 days free and no card. You can add a card up front instead, and it still charges nothing until day 14.

Almost every paid app in the marketplace comes with a 14-day free trial, and the ordinary way in does not ask for a card at all. The exception is the Website Builder, which is included with your plan from Starter upwards rather than sold as a trial, so its tile offers an upgrade instead of a trial.

The choice sits on the second screen, not the first

Open a paid app in App Marketplace. Its sheet has one button, Start Free Trial. Pressing it installs nothing, opens no payment page and charges nothing. It swaps in a confirm panel, and the confirm panel is where you actually choose.

That panel repeats the monthly, yearly or fixed-term picker, says under it that no card is required, and gives you two buttons:

  • the free trial button. It creates the trial and stops there. No card is collected and nothing is set up to charge you later. The app's screens appear immediately and work in full for the fourteen days.
  • Add card and subscribe, in the note beneath it. That one does take you to a payment page and sets the subscription up there and then, but your remaining trial goes with it. Nothing is charged until the fourteen days are up, the app does not stop when they are, and there is nothing left for you to action later.

Which one to pick

Just having a look. Start the free trial. If you do nothing, the app locks at the end of the fourteen days. You are not charged, and nothing you recorded is deleted. See what happens when an app trial ends.

You already know you want it. Add card and subscribe. Same fourteen free days, no gap at the end.

What we send you before anything happens

  • No card on file. A notice in the app and an email three days before the trial ends.
  • Card on file. An email within 48 hours of the first charge, carrying the exact amount, whether it is monthly or yearly, and the date.

Each of those is sent once per app, per business.

Separately, a small number of apps send a short getting-started email on the day you install and again three days later. Most apps do not, so no email is not a sign anything has gone wrong.

The free trial only ever runs once

Removing an app and adding it back does not restart the trial. The original end date is kept and reused. Once a trial has been spent, the install is refused and you are pointed at subscribing instead. That holds however the app is installed, because it is enforced in our database as well as on the screen.

Bundles are the exception

Installing a paid bundle takes you to a payment page and collects a card at that point, unlike a single app. The 14-day trial still applies, so the card is on file and nothing is charged until the trial is up. See what is included in an app bundle.

Who can start a trial

An owner or an admin. Not available while you are viewing a demo business.
