List your business, freeHow to choose a good Massage Therapist
- Massage therapists are not AHPRA-registered in Australia, so check qualifications and membership of a recognised professional association yourself.
- For private health rebates, the therapist must belong to an association your fund recognises; ask before booking, not after.
- Match the modality to your problem: remedial for injuries and chronic tension, relaxation for stress, sports for training recovery.
- Look for a Diploma of Remedial Massage or higher if you want assessment and treatment, not just general relaxation.
- Check hygiene basics in reviews: fresh linen for each client, clean rooms and professional draping practices.
- Read reviews mentioning your issue, and be wary of anyone promising to cure conditions in a set number of sessions.
Questions to ask before you book
Frequently asked questions
Are massage therapists regulated in Australia?
No. Massage therapy is not part of the AHPRA national registration scheme, so there is no government register of massage therapists. The industry self-regulates through professional associations that set qualification, insurance and hygiene standards for members. That is why checking a therapist's qualification, association membership and reviews matters more here than in registered health professions.
Can I claim massage on my private health insurance?
Often, for remedial massage, if two things line up: your extras policy includes remedial massage, and the therapist holds membership of an association your fund recognises, with a provider number for that fund. Relaxation massage generally is not claimable. Ask the therapist to confirm they can process your fund before you book, and check your annual limits.
What is the difference between remedial and relaxation massage?
Remedial massage starts with assessment and targets specific problems such as chronic neck tension, injuries or postural pain, using deeper, more clinical techniques. Relaxation massage is a lighter, full-body treatment aimed at stress relief rather than fixing anything specific. Remedial usually costs more, requires a diploma-qualified therapist and is the only one health funds typically rebate.
