What is the difference between registered and unregistered NDIS providers?
Registered providers have been audited against the NDIS Practice Standards, follow the NDIS Code of Conduct with NDIS Commission oversight, and must use worker screening. Unregistered providers still must follow the Code of Conduct but are not audited. Both can deliver quality support; registration mostly matters for how your plan is managed and the safeguards you want.
Can I use an unregistered provider?
It depends on how your plan is managed. Agency-managed funding can only be spent with registered providers. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use registered or unregistered providers, which widens your choice, especially in regional areas. Some supports, such as specialist disability accommodation and behaviour support involving restrictive practices, require a registered provider regardless of plan management.
What is the NDIS Worker Screening Check?
It is a national background check for people working in risk-assessed roles with NDIS participants, run through state and territory worker screening units and tracked on a national database. Registered providers must only use cleared workers in those roles. If you use unregistered providers, you can still ask workers to hold a clearance, and it is reasonable to require one.
